Chernobyl drone strike damages protective dome, repairs hampered by radiation risk

A Russian-launched Shahed-136 drone hit Chernobyl’s protective dome on Feb. 14, tearing holes in the New Safe Confinement and burning part of its inner membrane. Radiation stayed stable, the IAEA said, but the dome’s containment function was partially compromised. Fires were fully extinguished by March 13. Ukraine faces a difficult repair job due to high radiation near the old sarcophagus.
